Don't Achieve Your Goals
"If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favourable" - Lucius Annaeus Seneca
Set high goals.
Achieve them to be happy.
I call bull.
Achieving your goals will not bring happiness.
Striving for them will.
Let me explain.
Goals orientate our actions and energy, They give us direction. But once achieved you can be disorientated and feeling lost. Often less happy than when you started.
Happiness comes from the struggle to improve. In knowing you are getting better, learning more and becoming more.
How do you navigate this?
Play Infinite games.
Finite games are played to win, They have fixed rules, a beginning, end, winners and losers. Think losing x amount of weight.
Infinite games are played to continue the game, The rules and boundaries change as the game continues. No winners. No end. Think mastering a martial art (you might lose weight along the way as a side effect).
So feel free to have goals.
But there will be no fanfare at the end.
The process is the prize.
